The 62nd National Maritime Day is being celebrated across the country today, including in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to honour India’s rich maritime legacy and ongoing contributions to the global shipping industry.
The day marks a significant moment in history—on April 5, 1919, ‘SS Loyalty’, the first ship owned by M/s Scindia Steam Navigation Company, sailed from Bombay to London, symbolizing India’s formal entry into the international maritime arena. National Maritime Day was first celebrated on April 5, 1964, and has since become an annual tribute to the nation’s maritime sector.
This year’s theme, “Samriddh Sagar – Viksit Bharat evam Neel Arth aur Harit Vikas ke liye Yuva”, highlights the crucial role of youth in advancing India’s blue economy, fostering green growth, and building a vibrant and self-reliant maritime sector.
Various events and programmes are underway across the nation to commemorate the occasion. In the Islands, too, authorities are organizing various events and programmes. Special recognition is also being given to individuals and marine organisations for their exceptional services and contributions to the maritime domain.
National Maritime Day continues to serve as a reminder of the country’s growing prowess in the shipping industry.
