82nd Martyrdom Anniversary Observed at Homfreygunj Martyrs’ Memorial

A solemn function was held at the Balidan Vedi of the Homfreygunj Martyrs’ Memorial on Friday to commemorate the 82nd Martyrdom Anniversary of the freedom fighters who were shot dead and buried at the site on January 30, 1944, by the Japanese imperial forces during World War II.

The Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman), Ms. Purva Garg, IAS, attended the programme as the chief guest and paid floral tributes by laying a wreath at the Martyrs’ Memorial. This was followed by homage offered by members of the Homfreygunj Martyrs’ Memorial, descendants of the martyrs, and prominent citizens of the Islands.

On the occasion, Ms. Garg also presented the Homfreygunj Martyrs’ Memorial Awards to meritorious students of Government Secondary School, Homfreygunj, recognising their academic achievements and encouraging the younger generation to uphold the values of sacrifice and patriotism.

A Sarva Dharma Prarthana (all-religion prayer) was organised in memory of the departed souls, reflecting the spirit of unity and harmony. Students of Government Secondary School, Homfreygunj, presented Ram Dhun, adding to the solemnity of the observance.

The programme was attended by the Patron of the Homfreygunj Martyrs’ Memorial, Mr. Gouri Shankar Pandey, General Secretary Mr. Jeivaish Shankar Pandey, along with other dignitaries, local residents, and members of the public.
