83rd Shaheedi Diwas of Dr. Diwan Singh ‘Kalepani’ Observed at Khalsa Public Senior Secondary School

The 83rd Shaheedi Diwas of Dr. Diwan Singh “Kalepani”, a legendary freedom fighter, was solemnly observed with patriotic fervour at Khalsa Public Senior Secondary School (KPSSS). The programme was graced by Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, along with Chairperson Sardar Surinder Singh, members of the KPSSS Management Committee, Mr. Sardar Swaran Singh, School Principal Dr. Sarabjeet Kaur Jagpal, staff members, students, parents and members of the Sikh Sangat. Padma Shri awardee Mr. Naresh Chandra Lal also joined the gathering in paying rich tributes to the revered national hero.

Dr. Diwan Singh, a medical doctor by training, was remembered as a great patriot and a zealous poet who endured severe torture during his imprisonment at the Cellular Jail. Sivaranjini, a student of Class XI, highlighted the inspiring life and supreme sacrifice of Dr. Diwan Singh, while Aliya of Class VIII recited his poem “Himmat Bina”, written during the freedom struggle. The rendition of the Shabd “Aisi Marni Jo Marey” by the students deeply moved the audience.

As part of the observance, various competitions including drawing, essay writing and speech contests on the life of Dr. Diwan Singh were organised for students. Medals and certificates of merit were distributed to the winners. Addressing the gathering, Principal Dr. Sarabjeet Kaur Jagpal underscored the timeless values and inspiration left behind by Dr. Diwan Singh and expressed pride that the institution continues to realise his vision of providing quality education to children from all sections of society.

Padma Shri awardee Mr. Naresh Chandra Lal motivated the staff and students to uphold the ideals and legacy of Dr. Diwan Singh. In his address, Hon’ble MP Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray congratulated the school fraternity for upholding the motto of Dr. Diwan Singh’s life, “Selfless Service to One and All”. He also highlighted various welfare schemes for students and spoke about upcoming developmental initiatives for the Islanders, encouraging students to embrace innovation, pursue start-up ideas and contribute to nation-building with zero tolerance towards corruption.

On the occasion, tributes were also paid to the former Education Director and Ex-Chief Patron of KPSSS, late Sardar Beant Singh, on his ninth death anniversary. The programme was coordinated by Mrs. Mitali Gharami and Mrs. Chamanpreet Kaur.
