A Legacy of Leadership: Remembering Mr. Hari Narayan Arora, A Beacon of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Andaman and Nicobar Islands has lost one of its greatest sons—the towering figure of Mr. Hari Narayan Arora, whose contributions to the islands spanned decades. His passing on the night of 15th December 2024, in Kolkata at the age of 97, has left a void that is deeply felt across the community.

From the bustling markets of Aberdeen Bazar to the quiet halls of political discourse, Mr. Arora’s presence had been a constant. A visionary entrepreneur, a revered political leader, and a compassionate philanthropist, he had shaped the islands’ destiny in ways too numerous to count. As former State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, he had been a guiding force, advocating for the welfare of his people and working tirelessly to bring about progress.

Mr. Arora also served as the President of the Andaman Chamber of Commerce & Industry (ANCCI), where he played a pivotal role in shaping the economic landscape of the islands, promoting local businesses, and fostering entrepreneurial spirit. His leadership had laid the foundation for many initiatives that would continue to empower the local business community for generations to come.

Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray, the current Member of Parliament for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, mourned the loss deeply, recalling the fond memories of working alongside Mr. Arora. Describing him as one of the strongest pillars of the BJP in the islands, Mr. Ray reflected on his immense contributions in various fields, including social service, education, and politics. He noted that Mr. Arora’s sincere efforts in strengthening the BJP in the region had created a lasting impact and that his passing had created a vacuum within the party. Mr. Ray expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and well-wishers, paying tribute to the late leader’s invaluable service.

Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, former Member of Parliament for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, also expressed his deep sorrow upon hearing of Mr. Arora’s passing. He highlighted the monumental impact the late leader had made through his work with both political and non-political organisations. His efforts, particularly in fostering business growth and community development, would remain etched in the fabric of the islands.

M. Vinod, President of the Andaman Association of Tour Operators, also shared his profound grief. For him and his fellow members, Mr. Arora was more than just a leader; he was a legend whose work in social, political, cultural, and business sectors would never be forgotten. His legacy, they believed, would continue to inspire future generations to serve the islands with the same dedication and humility.

The loss was similarly felt by Mr. Vishal Jolly, National Executive Member of BJP and former State President of the party in the islands. Reflecting on Mr. Arora’s long life and distinguished career, he noted the irreplaceable role he had played not only in politics but in shaping the socio-economic landscape of the islands. Mr. Jolly extended his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for Mr. Arora’s soul to find peace.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), A&N Islands, also joined in mourning the loss. Their message was one of deep sorrow, recalling Mr. Arora’s legacy as both a visionary leader and a humble human being who dedicated his life to the betterment of society. They recalled his tireless efforts in championing local entrepreneurship and his leadership in the establishment of the BJP in the region, leaving behind a void that would be difficult to fill.

Even those from different political affiliations, such as the Communist Party of India (Marxist), expressed their condolences, acknowledging Mr. Arora’s contributions to the islands in various social, cultural, and business spheres. D. Ayyappan, Secretary of CPI(M), spoke of the late leader’s association with several organisations and his enduring influence across the islands, underscoring the respect he earned from all corners of society.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands Unit of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) also joined the tributes, mourning the loss of a social worker, entrepreneur, and revered leader. In their message, they expressed their sorrow and prayed for the eternal peace of Mr. Arora’s soul. They emphasised how his dedication and contributions to the islands would never be forgotten and hoped that his memory would provide solace to those mourning his loss.

The tributes poured in from all corners of the islands, reflecting the profound impact Mr. Hari Narayan Arora had on his community and his country. His legacy would live on not just in the memories of those who worked with him, but in the continued progress of the islands he had worked so hard to improve.

As his family grieves, the entire community stands with them, offering their condolences and praying for the departed soul. May his life of service, humility, and vision continue to inspire all who knew him, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.
