Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS) marked the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with an Elocution Competition held at the School of Nursing in Port Blair. More than 40 enthusiastic participants gathered to articulate their views on the theme ‘Drug Abuse and its Prevention’.

Led by Dr. Subrata Saha, Project Director of ANACS, and supported by Dr. Shiny Varghese, Principal of the Nursing School, the event aimed to raise awareness about the growing threat of drug abuse, particularly among the youth. Ms. Bincy. V. Kuruvilla, Tutor and Nodal Officer of the Red Ribbon Club at the School of Nursing, delivered a compelling keynote address. She emphasised the critical role of education and community support in combating drug abuse.

During the competition, first-year students received orientation sessions on the activities of the Red Ribbon Club (RRC), along with essential information on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, and AIDS. Dr. Jahanara Yasmeen, DD (IEC& MS), Mr. Kaushik Halder, AD (IEC), and Mr. Santosh Baghel, AD (Documentation), facilitated interactive sessions to dispel common misconceptions and myths.

Participants showcased their oratory skills, demonstrating a profound understanding of the detrimental effects of drugs on individuals and society. Sara Kerketta clinched the first prize, followed by Bibek Chakraborthy in second place and Shruti Mitra securing the third prize.

The competition not only provided a platform for students to express their perspectives but also underscored the collective effort required to address the pervasive issue of drug abuse in society.
