Andaman and Nicobar Police is gearing up for the implementation of three new criminal laws scheduled to roll out on 1st July 2024, marking a significant stride towards modernised and reformed criminal jurisprudence.
In a move to facilitate the understanding and implementation of these new laws, the Andaman and Nicobar Police proudly unveiled an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based Chatbot named “Naye Kanoon Mitra” on April 30, 2024. The unveiling ceremony, led by the esteemed Director General of Police, Mr. Devesh Chandra Srivastva, IPS, witnessed the presence of high-ranking officials including IGP Ms. Sindhu Pillai A.,IPS; Mr. Ajay Krishan Sharma, IPS; and DIG Ms. Monika Bhardwaj, IPS, among others.
The “Naye Kanoon Mitra” chatbot has been specifically designed to simplify and provide reference to the three new laws: Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
Developed by SP South Andaman Ms. Niharika Bhatt, IPS, and ASP South Andaman Mr. Vikas Swami, IPS, the chatbot serves as a virtual assistant, offering guidance on the principles and guidelines outlined in the newly enacted laws. Accessible through a weblink and QR-code, the chatbot aims to make legal knowledge more accessible to the public.
This marks the third chatbot launched by the Andaman & Nicobar Police, following the introduction of “Election Mitra” and “Cyber Saarthi” earlier in April 2024. “Election Mitra” provides authentic information from various manuals of the Election Commission of India in an interactive manner, while “Cyber Saarthi” aims to educate the public about cybercrimes.
In conjunction with the launch of “Naye Kanoon Mitra,” the Andaman & Nicobar Police has undertaken a comprehensive territory-wide campaign over the past four months to create awareness of the new criminal laws. Displaying over 30 large hoardings, standees, banners, and distributing more than 3000 pamphlets, the campaign aims to reach even the far-flung regions of the islands.
Moreover, all police personnel are undergoing extensive training to ensure a seamless transition to the new laws. Collaborating with esteemed institutions such as the National Forensic Science University, Gujarat; National Law University, Bangalore; Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D); and Central Detective Training Institute (CDTI), Kolkata, the training sessions aim to cover all personnel before the July 1st deadline.
The general public is encouraged to utilise the services of the “Naye Kanoon Mitra” chatbot through the provided weblink or QR-code, actively participating in promoting the values of the newly implemented laws for a better tomorrow.
