A & N Police Issues Public Advisory on Scams by Fraudsters Impersonating Senior Govt. Officials and Elected Representatives on WhatsApp

A sudden surge in fraudulent impersonation of senior government officials, including elected representatives, in the Union Territories through WhatsApp has prompted a stern warning from the Andaman & Nicobar Police. These scammers have been using the photographs and profiles of high-ranking dignitaries to engage in deceptive conversations with government employees and private individuals, soliciting money and online purchases under false pretences.

Authorities have observed a troubling trend of cybercriminals masquerading as esteemed government officials and other dignitaries, manipulating unsuspecting victims into financial transactions and online purchases.

The Andaman & Nicobar Police have issued a public advisory, urging citizens to exercise extreme caution when interacting with unknown numbers on WhatsApp. It is essential for residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity promptly. Incidents of such nature can be reported through the portal https://cybercrime.gov.in/ or the toll-free Cyber Helpline No. 1930.

The police department also encourages the public to stay informed and up-to-date on online safety practices.
