A & N Police Mourns Loss of Beloved K-9 Herman

Andaman and Nicobar Police Department is grieving the loss of its loyal and courageous K-9 unit member, Herman, who passed away on November 21, 2024, due to age-related ailments. Herman, a Male Labrador renowned for his unwavering dedication and bravery, served the department and the community for an impressive eight years.

Herman retired from active duty on December 12, 2022, due to advancing age and health concerns. He spent his retirement under the care of the Police Dog Squad Unit, where he was lovingly tended to until his passing.

Born on January 2, 2014, Herman was acquired from M/S Bhogadi Kennel in Secunderabad in June 2014. He underwent seven months of rigorous training in explosive detection at the National Training Centre for Dogs, BSF Academy, Tekanpur, Madhya Pradesh, before officially joining the A&N Police Department in December 2014.

Herman’s expertise in explosive detection played a crucial role in ensuring security during visits by VIPs and VVIPs to the islands. He also represented the department in numerous prestigious events, including Passing Out Parades, Republic Day celebrations, and Raising Day ceremonies. Over his years of service, Herman’s sharp instincts and tireless commitment contributed significantly to resolving critical cases, earning him respect and admiration throughout the force.

Beyond his professional accolades, Herman was cherished by officers and staff for his gentle temperament and affectionate nature. He was more than just a colleague—he was a trusted partner and a beloved companion to all who worked alongside him.

To honour Herman’s remarkable service, the A&N Police Department held a wreath-laying and memorial ceremony on November 22 at the Police Dog Squad Unit premises. Officers, including Mr. A. Koan, IPS, DIGP (Intelligence), and Mr. Vishesh Dhatterwal, Dy.SP (CID), led heartfelt tributes, celebrating Herman’s invaluable contributions to the department and the community.

The department extends its deepest condolences to Herman’s handlers, who provided him with unwavering care and love throughout his life. Herman’s legacy of loyalty and service will remain etched in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
