The relentless efforts of the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Police have yielded significant results in the fight against drug-related crimes. In a recent update, the A&N Police reported a substantial increase in the registration of cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act during the current year, 2023, when compared to the previous year.
As of October 6, 2023, the A&N Police has registered a staggering 57 cases under the NDPS Act, reflecting a notable surge when contrasted with the entire year of 2022, which saw 38 such cases. This remarkable escalation signifies the police force’s unwavering commitment to tackling the drug menace in the region.
The data released by the A&N Police reveals a significant seizure of contraband substances during 2023, including 62.207 kilograms of Ganja, 3.183 kilograms of Methamphetamine, 27 cannabis plants, 497 bottles of Codeine-based syrup, and 47 tablets of Alprazolam and Nitrazepam. Additionally, 80 drug peddlers have been apprehended in connection with these cases.
Comparatively, in 2022, the police recorded the confiscation of 29.547 kilograms of Ganja, 17.989 kilograms of Methamphetamine, 9 cannabis plants, and 14 bottles of Codeine-based syrup, with 57 drug peddlers being arrested.
While the A&N Police’s diligence in curbing the drug trade is commendable, it also underscores the gravity of the drug problem in society. The increasing numbers of cases suggest that the menace of drugs is more pervasive than previously thought, necessitating collective action.
Authorities are urging the public to collaborate with the police by providing valuable information and tips to aid in combating drug-related activities. To facilitate this, the A&N Police have established a dedicated helpline/tip line at 9531856080. It is emphasised that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential by the police.
The recent surge in NDPS Act cases serves as a stark reminder that the battle against drugs is an ongoing one, and the responsibility to eradicate this menace rests not only with law enforcement but also with society at large.
