In a concerted effort to promote sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship, the Andaman Association of Tour Operators (AATO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, organized a tree plantation drive at North Bay, South Andaman, under the nationwide campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’.
The event saw active participation from more than 50 AATO members, local tourism stakeholders, and representatives from the Hope Town Panchayat. Participants planted 100 saplings of native coastal species aimed at strengthening the region’s green cover and ecological balance.
Addressing the gathering, AATO President Mr. M. Vinod emphasised the vital role of community engagement in protecting the environment and underlined the tourism sector’s responsibility in supporting such green initiatives.
Mr. N. Vel Murugan, Assistant Director at India Tourism (Ministry of Tourism, Government of India), spoke about the vision of ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, describing it as a tribute to the nurturing role of nature and a step toward cultivating eco-conscious values among citizens.
The initiative forms part of a broader push to align tourism development in the Andaman Islands with principles of sustainability and responsible environmental care. Organizers said the campaign not only reinforces the emotional bond between individuals and nature but also demonstrates the growing synergy between local communities and the tourism industry in driving conservation efforts.
AATO expressed gratitude to the India Tourism (Ministry of Tourism), the Hope Town Panchayat, and all contributors for their support in making the event a success.
