A delegation from the Andaman Association of Tour Operators (AATO), led by its President Mr. M. Vinod, met with Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Mr. Sanjay Kumar Sinha, IFS, to address growing concerns over swimming restrictions and the temporary closure of the popular Elephant Beach.
The six-member delegation highlighted widespread confusion among tourists, fuelled by misinformation suggesting a blanket ban on swimming across all beaches in the Andaman Islands. According to AATO, this has adversely affected tourist perception and could potentially harm the local tourism industry.
In response, Mr. Sinha clarified that swimming is not banned across the islands. He stated that restrictions are in place only in specific areas—such as those falling under Marine National Parks or locations where crocodile sightings have been reported, including Wandoor.
Regarding Elephant Beach, Mr. Sinha explained that the site was temporarily closed following a recent crocodile sighting, as a precautionary measure. He assured the delegation that the beach would be reopened to tourists soon, following a thorough safety assessment.
Welcoming the clarification, AATO appreciated the Forest Department’s proactive communication and emphasized the need for timely updates on beach closures and reopenings. The association reiterated its commitment to working collaboratively with the administration to ensure safe, sustainable, and tourist-friendly practices across the islands.
