In a bid to promote eco-tourism and raise awareness about the unique biodiversity of the Andaman Islands, the Andaman Association of Tour Operators (AATO) organized a birdwatching tour at Chidiyatapu Biological Park on September 25, 2024. The event, held as part of the World Tourism Day celebrations, was conducted in collaboration with the Andaman Avians Club.

A total of 30 students from Andaman College (ANCOL) and 20 AATO members participated in the tour, designed to highlight the ecological significance of the region and encourage sustainable tourism practices. The participants were welcomed and briefed by Mr. A.C. Tilak, Deputy Director of Chidiyatapu Biological Park, who emphasised the park’s role in conserving the diverse bird species native to the Andaman Islands.

The birdwatching session was led by Mr. Arun Singh, President of the Andaman Avians Club, who shared his expertise on birdwatching techniques and provided valuable insights into the various bird species observed during the tour. His detailed commentary on the importance of avian conservation left a lasting impression on the participants, particularly the students, who were eager to learn more about the island’s natural habitat.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. M. Vinod, President of AATO, highlighted the growing popularity of birdwatching as a key component of tourism in the islands. He underlined how such activities are essential in promoting sustainable tourism practices, which are vital to preserving the pristine environment of the Andaman Islands. “Birdwatching is not only a leisure activity but a way to connect with nature and understand the importance of protecting our natural resources,” Mr. Vinod remarked.

The students from ANCOL showed great enthusiasm throughout the event, with many expressing their newfound appreciation for the region’s rich wildlife. The event also served as a platform to educate the younger generation about the significance of preserving natural habitats and the critical role of conservation efforts in ensuring the survival of species unique to the Andaman Islands.

The birdwatching tour at Chidiyatapu marked the commencement of AATO’s weeklong celebration of World Tourism Day. The association has planned a series of events aimed at promoting eco-friendly tourism and fostering a deeper connection between visitors and the natural environment of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
