Sri Vijaya Puram, 29 January 2025

A delegation led by former Pramukh of Mayabunder, Mr. Abdul Siddique, met with Msi. Nandini Maharaj (IAS), Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman, to discuss pressing issues affecting the residents of Mayabunder. Several concerns related to healthcare, transportation, infrastructure, and connectivity were brought to the forefront during the meeting.

One of the major issues raised was the lack of specialist doctors at Dr. R.P. District Hospital, Mayabunder. Mr. Siddique emphasized the need for posting medical specialists to reduce patient referrals to G.B. Pant Hospital in Sri Vijaya Puram. He pointed out that such referrals place a financial strain on economically weaker families who must bear additional costs for treatment and accommodation in the capital.

The delegation also highlighted the urgent need for a functional mortuary van in Mayabunder. At present, families of deceased individuals face financial hardship as they are forced to hire private vehicles for transportation of the bodies. The introduction of a government-provided mortuary van is expected to alleviate this burden.

Another key concern discussed was the development of a playground at Pokadera on the allotted land. The delegation stressed that having a dedicated recreational space would benefit the youth and the local community by promoting sports and physical activities.

In addition, the need for improved mobile network and internet services within Dr. R.P. Hospital was raised. Patients, particularly those without attendants, struggle to communicate with their families due to poor connectivity. Government officials stationed away from their families also face difficulties due to unreliable internet services.

The delegation also urged the resumption of passenger vessel services— Nalanda and Sindhu—between Sri Vijaya Puram, Mayabunder, and Diglipur. The absence of these services has affected transportation for residents and businesses alike.

Lastly, the delegation requested the installation of an ATM in Mohanpur village. The availability of an ATM would greatly benefit the residents of Mohanpur and neighboring villages by providing easy access to banking facilities.

Deputy Commissioner Ms. Nandini Maharaj gave a patient hearing to all the concerns raised and assured the delegation that appropriate steps would be taken to address these issues.

Mr. Abdul Siddique expressed his gratitude on behalf of the people of Mayabunder for the Deputy Commissioner’s willingness to consider and resolve the grievances of the local population.
