Fulfilling a long-pending demand of the local community, the District Administration, Nicobar, through the Integrated Tribal Development Project (ITDP), has provided a mortuary van to the Sub-Tribal Council, Harminder Bay.
The initiative follows the assurance given by the Chief Secretary during his visit to Harminder Bay in April 2025, when he acknowledged the urgent requirement of the facility and directed immediate action. Acting upon this, the District Administration of Nicobar through ITDP ensured timely procurement and deployment of the vehicle.
The mortuary van was formally handed over on 17th April 2025, to the Secretary of the Sub-Tribal Council, Harminder Bay. Officials said the facility will ease the transportation of deceased persons with dignity and timeliness—an essential service that the community had long awaited.
In addition, two more mortuary vans have been procured by ITDP for Katchal and Chowra. These vehicles are currently in transit at Kamorta and will soon be handed over to the respective Tribal Councils.
The initiative reflects the Administration’s commitment to tribal welfare and responsive governance, ensuring that critical community needs are addressed promptly.
