In a significant stride towards enhancing inter-island air connectivity and boosting tourism, the Directorate of Civil Aviation, under the aegis of Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, has embarked on several initiatives. These endeavours aim to not only revolutionise travel between the picturesque islands but also contribute to the growth of the tourism sector in the region.
One of the major milestones in this endeavour is the approval of a comprehensive fleet upgrade project for helicopters. Under this initiative, the ageing Dauphin N3 Helicopters currently in operation will be replaced by new helicopters featuring advanced technology and increased carrying capacity, through Pawan Hans Limited. The project, expected to cost approximately Rs. 415 crores, is set to redefine safety standards and operational capabilities, particularly in challenging weather conditions.
The introduction of these state-of-the-art helicopters not only promises a more comfortable journey for islanders but also holds the promise of significantly enhancing inter-island connectivity, further promoting tourism in the region.
In addition to upgrading the helicopter fleet, the government is taking steps to ensure safe landing facilities across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Currently, there are 19 helipads in the archipelago, with 11 being frequently utilised by the Civil Aviation Department. Recognising the need for increased emergency landing options, the Administration has devised a plan for expanding the number of helipads, categorising them as ‘Emergency Helipads.’
As part of this initiative, new helipads are under construction on Smith Island and Hanspuri at a cost of Rs. 1.45 crores and Rs. 1.70 crores, respectively. Furthermore, additional locations have been identified where construction of emergency helipads are proposed, including Afra Bay, Maccachua, and Pilomillow.
The overarching vision behind this initiative is to provide connectivity to all inhabited islands, ensuring swift response during emergencies or disasters. With these developments, the Administration aims to enhance the safety and accessibility of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, making them a more attractive destination for both tourists and residents.
