Agriculture Department Celebrates World Food Day in Car Nicobar

The Department of Agriculture, Car Nicobar, recently celebrated World Food Day at the Community Hall in Perka Village, highlighting the theme, ‘Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future.’ The event brought together local leaders, farmers, and agricultural experts to discuss the importance of food security and sustainable practices.

Ms. R. Bhu Bharthy, Agriculture Officer, welcomed the attendees and emphasized the significance of World Food Day. She noted that food is a fundamental human right, stressing the importance of ensuring access to a safe, nutritious, and diverse diet for everyone. “A balanced and affordable diet is essential for a healthy society,” she said, echoing this year’s theme.

Ms. Sunita Kumari, Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), ICDS, Car Nicobar, spoke about the critical role of a balanced diet in maintaining health. She highlighted the nutritional benefits of millets, describing them as a ‘superfood’ and sharing various millet-based recipes. Her presentation aimed to inspire the community to include more millets in their daily meals as part of a healthier diet.

Mr. Joshua Paul, Assistant Field Officer (AFO), took the stage to explain sustainable farming practices that promote long-term food security. His insights focused on how farmers can adopt methods to ensure that their food production is both sustainable and beneficial for future generations.

In his address, the 1st Headman of Perka Village encouraged farmers to expand their cultivation efforts, particularly in vegetables and fruits, which are abundant locally. He also advised them to incorporate these home-grown foods into their diets for better nutrition. Additionally, he urged the development of kitchen gardens, stressing the need for proper fencing to protect the crops.

The event included several competitions aimed at engaging the local farming community. Participants showcased their skills in three categories: Millet Recipes, Traditional Recipes, and Farm Produce. Prizes were awarded to the top three winners in each category, sparking excitement among the attendees. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Headmen of Perka Village were also present, contributing to the event’s success.

The programme saw active participation from the staff of the Agriculture Department and the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), with around 50 farmers in attendance. The event not only celebrated the spirit of World Food Day but also reinforced the community’s commitment to food security and healthier eating habits.
