The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), in association with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), organised a two-day training programme on Fodder Cultivation and Management at Calicut village under the jurisdiction of the Veterinary Hospital, Garacharma.

A total of 20 farmers participated in the programme, which focused on scientific techniques for fodder production and management to ensure year-round availability of green fodder for livestock. The training sessions covered key aspects such as selection of suitable fodder crops, soil preparation, sowing methods, irrigation practices, intercropping strategies, nutrient management, pest and disease control, harvesting, and storage techniques tailored to the local island conditions.

The initiative aimed to strengthen fodder security by equipping farmers with practical knowledge to maintain a consistent supply of quality green fodder, thereby reducing dependency on external feed sources and enhancing milk and meat production in rural areas.

Participants appreciated the hands-on approach adopted during the training and expressed their willingness to implement the scientific practices on their farms.

The programme reflects the Department’s continued commitment to promoting scientific livestock management, ensuring sustainable fodder availability, and empowering farmers through extension and capacity-building initiatives in collaboration with ATMA across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a press release from the Department of AH&VS stated.
