In a step towards boosting rural livelihoods and food security in remote island communities, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS) organized a poultry chick distribution program at Katchal Island on June 29, 2025.

Under the department’s rural poultry development initiative, a total of 171 six-week-old Vanaraja and Nicobari chicks were distributed among four selected beneficiaries. The chicks, sourced from the Composite Livestock Farm (CLF), Kamorta, aim to promote backyard poultry farming as a sustainable and income-generating activity for rural families.

The distribution was conducted in the presence of Mr. A. Rajendran, Settlers President, and Captain Mr. L. Aron, ensuring transparency and active involvement of the local community in the implementation process.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the AH&VS Department to strengthen the rural economy and support self-reliance across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. By equipping farmers with resources for small-scale poultry farming, the department aims to enhance local food production and improve livelihoods in remote and underserved areas.
