The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Car Nicobar, successfully concluded Animal Welfare Fortnight 2026 with a series of innovative and community-oriented programmes that combined cultural traditions, scientific awareness and environmental conservation.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative for the island, the department organised a grand Mattu Pongal celebration on January 15 at the Departmental Dairy Unit in Perka. The event honoured cattle for their vital role in agriculture and rural livelihoods. Mr. Rahul L. Nair, IPS, attended as chief guest, while Dr. Naveen and Mr. Paul, 1st Captain of Perka Village, were present as guests of honour.

Officials from the Agriculture Department, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Fisheries and Forest Department also participated in the programme, underscoring inter-departmental coordination and collective commitment towards livestock welfare.

On January 24, the department conducted a focused training session for dairy farmers at Biglapthy village on the misuse and health risks associated with Oxytocin injections in dairy animals. The session highlighted the potential adverse effects on cattle as well as on consumers of milk.

Alongside the awareness programme, a comprehensive house-to-house deworming drive was carried out across the village to ensure complete coverage of livestock. Veterinary teams delivered essential services directly at farmers’ doorsteps, strengthening preventive healthcare measures in the region.

The fortnight concluded on January 30 with a large-scale plantation drive of fruit-bearing trees along the departmental farm in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Forest. The initiative aims to create a sustainable food source for the island’s avian population and promote ecological balance alongside dairy activities.

Through these initiatives, AH&VS Car Nicobar reaffirmed its commitment to animal welfare, farmer awareness and environmental sustainability on the island.
