The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), Andaman and Nicobar Administration, recently organised two Veterinary Infertility Camps in South Andaman to address reproductive health issues in livestock and boost farm productivity. The camps were held at Calicut and RGT Road, bringing veterinary care and awareness directly to farmers’ doorsteps.

At Calicut, veterinary teams attended to 65 bovine, 39 caprine and 150 poultry cases. Poor oestrous detection was identified as a major cause of infertility, and farmers were sensitised on the oestrous cycle, timely heat detection and insemination techniques to improve conception rates. Practical strategies were also shared to help farmers overcome reproductive challenges.

At RGT Road, cattle including adult cows, calves and heifers were examined. The veterinary team diagnosed one case of persistent corpus luteum and provided targeted treatments such as Buserelin injections, 1000 ml of dewormer, 5000 ml of calcium liquid, 1.2 kg of Milkocide and 5 kg of mineral mixture. These measures aimed to address reproductive and nutritional deficiencies, ultimately supporting better milk production and livestock health.

By organising the camps at farmers’ premises, AH&VS ensured that quality veterinary services and farmer education remained accessible to local communities, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable animal husbandry in the Islands.
