In a bid to promote sustainable livestock farming and enhance the livelihoods of local farmers, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), A&N Administration, organized a piggery management initiative in Swaraj Dweep on July 12, 2025.
The initiative focused on spreading awareness about piglet castration, a key management practice known to improve growth performance, temperament, and meat quality in pigs. Veterinary experts interacted with farmers during the programme, highlighting the scientific and economic benefits of early castration in piglets.
Encouraged by the session, local farmers showed enthusiastic participation and requested on-site castration services. Responding to the demand, the AH&VS team conducted castration on 12 piglets at two small-scale piggery farms on the island, ensuring the procedures were carried out with due care and adherence to animal welfare standards.
The department’s proactive outreach is seen as a step forward in improving animal husbandry practices in the islands while supporting the income and productivity of rural livestock farmers.
