The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), Andaman & Nicobar State Organising Committee, celebrated International Women’s Day with events held at Sri Vijaya Puram and Diglipur.
At Sri Vijaya Puram, a gathering took place at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali, where women from various backgrounds participated. Presiding over the event, D. Hemalatha highlighted the significance of International Women’s Day in the islands. Addressing the gathering, S. Chithra, Treasurer of AIDWA’s State Organising Committee, emphasized the role of women in social progress.
S. Sherly spoke about prevailing social inequalities and the urgent need to address them, while Anitha Nath G and R. Sushila Devi raised concerns over the increasing availability of drugs in the islands. They underscored the importance of educating women about the dangers of drug abuse, particularly among the youth. Other speakers, including Sumitra Bahadur, Kanti Rao, and D. Dhanamma, discussed various issues affecting women in the region.
Adding to the discussions, D. Ayyappan, Vice President of the CITU State Committee, also addressed the gathering. The event was attended by C. Anandi, Secretary of AIDWA’s State Committee.
Meanwhile, in Diglipur, the AIDWA Diglipur Area Committee marked the occasion with a special meeting of women. Speakers Nandita Halder, Anjali Adhikari, and Kavita Karmakar deliberated on a range of issues concerning women, both nationally and locally. Sunil Bepari, President of the CITU Diglipur Zonal Committee, also shared his views on the occasion.
The events reaffirmed AIDWA’s commitment to advocating for gender equality, raising awareness on pressing issues, and empowering women in the islands.
