The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), Andaman & Nicobar State Committee, recently organised a series of street corner meetings and public announcements across various parts of Diglipur Tehsil to highlight issues faced by farmers and press for a set of key demands.

During the meetings, the organisation demanded that absolute ownership rights over land be granted to landholders, along with assured and timely supply of fertilisers and seeds to farmers. Strong opposition was also voiced against the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Seeds Bill, 2025. Other demands included provision of electricity subsidy to farmers, implementation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agricultural produce, and establishment of Kisan Mandis in the region, among others.

Speaking at the meetings, Dr. Gouranga Majhi, President of the AIKS Andaman & Nicobar State Committee, criticised what he termed as “anti-farmer policies” being pursued by the Modi government. He stated that such policies have led to widespread distress among farmers across the country, with thousands reportedly taking their own lives. Dr. Majhi alleged that farmers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have not been extended adequate benefits and accused the Agriculture Department of failing to provide necessary assistance to needy farmers in the islands.

Addressing the gatherings, Ramjeeban Sarkar, Vice President of the AIKS State Committee and former Pradhan of Kalighat Gram Panchayat, expressed concern over the rising prices of seeds, fertilisers and other agricultural inputs. He said that escalating costs have made it increasingly difficult for farmers in the islands to carry out farming activities on their land.

The meetings witnessed participation of farmers from different areas of Diglipur, with AIKS leaders reiterating their commitment to continue mobilising farmers on issues affecting their livelihoods.
