Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that the project coming up in Great Nicobar would make the Andaman and Nicobar Islands an important trade location on the world map and an important centre of strategic security. He added that when this project is completed, after a decade this area will become a region attracting the highest number of tourists in the world.

Addressing a public gathering at Netaji Stadium, Shah mentioned that several policies have been formulated in this regard. He said that Andaman and Nicobar offers an important location in the Indo-Pacific, that there are many possibilities in the blue economy and that tourism potential is filled to the brim in these islands.

Earlier, Shah also said that without losing heritage, while keeping the environment safe and strengthening security, the Government of India is committed to making this group of islands a fully developed part of India. Referring to the broader development of the islands, he said that the Andaman and Nicobar group was once seen as a place where the country’s treasury was spent, but expressed confidence that after the next ten years the group would become a contributor to the country’s treasury.
