The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has initiated groundwork for the upcoming Census of India 2027, with the first meeting of the UT-level Census Coordination Committee held on August 29 under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS.

Senior officials and Secretaries of various departments participated in the meeting. Ms. Purva Garg, IAS, Director of Census Operations and Convenor of the Committee, delivered a detailed presentation on the tentative census calendar, status of preparatory activities, and the new digital innovations to be introduced.

She informed that the Census 2027 will, for the first time, be conducted digitally nationwide in two phases – House Listing & Housing Census (HLO) followed by Population Enumeration (PE). As part of the preparations, a pre-test exercise of House Listing and Housing Census is scheduled for October–November 2025 in selected areas of all three districts of the Islands.

Emphasizing inclusivity, the Chief Secretary directed officials to accord special focus on enumeration in tribal areas to ensure accuracy and complete coverage. The Director of Census Operations assured that all necessary measures will be taken to address these concerns. (Story Based on PR)
