Andaman and Nicobar Administration has sanctioned a ₹1.38-crore project for the construction of a Filter Bed Unit and a Clear Water Reservoir at Wrafter Creek in Baratang.

According to the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, the project aims to address the long-pending demand for a reliable and treated drinking water supply in Wrafter Creek, Khattakhari and Rajatgarh villages. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the availability and quality of potable water in the region.

The sanctioned works include construction of a modern filter bed, a Clear Water Reservoir with a storage capacity of 1.35 lakh litres, relaying of pipelines and installation of an 8 HP diesel engine pump set. Once completed, the project is expected to enhance daily water supply and contribute to better public health and living standards in the beneficiary villages, the Administration said in a press release.

The project is being implemented by the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) as part of the Administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen water supply systems, particularly in areas facing water stress and growing demand.

Meanwhile, the APWD has appealed to residents to use water judiciously, noting that water availability reduces considerably during the summer months.

The Andaman and Nicobar Administration reiterated its commitment to improving essential civic infrastructure and ensuring consistent access to safe drinking water for the people of the islands.
