The Andaman and Nicobar Fire and Emergency Services extended warm Diwali greetings to residents across the islands, wishing them a joyous and safe celebration. Emphasizing the importance of fire safety during the festival, the department has issued essential guidelines aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring a peaceful Diwali.

To minimize fire hazards and reduce pollution, A&N Fire and Emergency Services urged residents to follow these simple safety measures:

Do’s:

  • Purchase quality firecrackers: Ensure firecrackers are legally approved to reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Light fireworks in open spaces: Use spacious areas like parks or large grounds, away from buildings, vehicles, and flammable items.
  • Keep water ready: Always have a bucket of water nearby for emergencies.
  • Choose cotton clothing: Cotton is less likely to catch fire than synthetic fabrics, minimising the risk of fire-related injuries.
  • Supervise children: Adults should oversee children while they handle firecrackers.
  • Dispose used firecrackers in water: After use, place them in a bucket of water to prevent any mishaps.
  • Avoid lighting multiple crackers at once: This prevents unexpected explosions.
  • Maintain safe distance: Stand back after lighting a firecracker.
  • Check wind direction: This prevents smoke or sparks from blowing towards homes or bystanders.

Don’ts:

  • Never use firecrackers indoors: Avoid lighting fireworks inside homes or near windows.
  • Avoid loose clothing: Loose garments are more prone to catching fire.
  • Keep firecrackers away from flammable items: Keep them away from dry leaves, gas cylinders, and vehicles.
  • Do not attempt to relight unused firecrackers: Dispose of them safely after waiting a while.
  • Avoid blocking exits: Do not set off fireworks in areas that could obstruct escape routes.
  • Do not leave diyas unattended: Lighting diyas near curtains or other flammable items can be dangerous.
  • Seek immediate medical help for burns: In case of injury, avoid home remedies and consult a medical professional.

These guidelines, outlined by A&N Fire and Emergency Services, are intended to protect residents from fire-related accidents and reduce air pollution. The department has urged everyone to cooperate and follow these steps to ensure a safe and incident-free Diwali celebration across the islands.
