The Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands has reconstituted the Regional Records Survey Committee (RRSC), along with District-level Sub-Committees for South Andaman, Middle & North Andaman, and Nicobar districts. The Sub-Committees will be chaired by the respective District Deputy Commissioners and will focus on surveying and cataloguing historical records, documents, manuscripts, and photographs related to the Islands’ rich heritage.
A meeting of the RRSC was convened on May 13, 2025, at the Mini Conference Hall of the Secretariat under the chairmanship of Secretary (Archives), Ms. Smitha R., IAS. The meeting saw active participation from members of all three District Sub-Committees, along with two representatives from the National Archives of India, New Delhi. Valuable suggestions and guidance were shared during the session to advance the preservation efforts.
Ms. Smitha R., who also heads the Archives Department, urged individuals and private institutions possessing relevant historical materials to come forward and share them with the A&N Archives. Contributions can be made either in person or by contacting the Archives office at 230695, or through the respective District Deputy Commissioners.
The Administration has assured that any costs incurred in photocopying or reproducing documents will be borne by the government. Furthermore, all contributors will be duly acknowledged by the RRSC for their support in preserving the Islands’ historical legacy, which will be a valuable resource for researchers, students, and the general public.
