Andaman & Nicobar AIDS Control Society (ANACS) took proactive steps towards HIV & AIDS awareness by organising an Orientation-cum-Capacity Building programme for the youth of the Red Ribbon Club (RRC) at Pondicherry University’s Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology in Port Blair on April 26, 2024.

Led by Dr. Subrata Saha, Project Director of ANACS, the programme saw enthusiastic participation from over 50 young individuals. Dr. R Mohanraju, a Professor, along with other senior faculty members of Pondicherry University, graced the occasion, encouraging the youth to delve deeper into understanding HIV & AIDS and to actively engage in RRC initiatives.

Dr. Jahanara Yasmeen, DD (IEC) of ANACS, shed light on the pivotal roles and responsibilities of the youth in preventing and controlling sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV, and AIDS. Various issues related to the syndrome were discussed, aiming to address misconceptions and dispel myths surrounding the disease.

Interactive sessions and discussions were conducted to foster a better understanding among the participants. Mr. Kaushik Kumar Halder, AD (IEC), and Mr. Santosh Baghel, AD (Documentation) from ANACS, were also present to provide their expertise and support.

Dr. K A Jayaraj, Assistant Professor and Nodal Officer (RRC)-cum-Complaint Officer at Pondicherry University, urged students to expand their involvement in the Red Ribbon Club. Certificates were distributed to participants for their active engagement in various activities, and a Blood Donation Camp organised by the Club added a noble dimension to the event.

The programme served as a platform for meaningful discussions, knowledge exchange, and community engagement, marking a significant step forward in the fight against HIV & AIDS stigma and misinformation.

Overall, the collaborative effort between ANACS and Pondicherry University’s Department of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology showcased the importance of youth empowerment and education in combating HIV & AIDS.
