The Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) on Wednesday conducted a comprehensive anti-hijack exercise at Sri Vijaya Puram Airport (Veer Savarkar International Airport), simulating a realistic hijack scenario to test and validate established response mechanisms.

The exercise, coordinated by INS Utkrosh under the aegis of ANC, was aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the airport’s contingency plan, ensuring passenger safety and strengthening seamless coordination among multiple agencies in the event of an actual hijack situation.

Officials said the drill witnessed active participation from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), National Security Guard (NSG), Airports Authority of India (AAI), and various State Government agencies. The coordinated response by all stakeholders reflected a high level of operational preparedness to handle emergent contingencies at the airport.

Following the exercise, a detailed debriefing session was conducted to analyse performance, identify key lessons and revalidate Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The review process was intended to further enhance preparedness and reinforce collective vigilance among all participating agencies.

The annual drill is conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and is designed to ensure that all agencies remain ready to respond swiftly and effectively to hijack-like situations, thereby safeguarding passenger safety.
