The Andaman & Nicobar Administration has expressed concern over a significant shortfall in rainfall during the ongoing Northeast Monsoon, warning that the deficiency has begun to adversely affect reservoir levels, groundwater recharge, and other surface water sources.
In view of the prevailing situation, the Administration has cautioned that drinking water availability could come under stress in the coming months if conservation measures are not adopted promptly. Citizens, institutions, and commercial establishments have been urged to extend full cooperation in conserving the limited water resources currently available.
The Administration has appealed to the public to use potable water strictly for essential purposes such as drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene. Non-essential usage—including washing of vehicles, excessive watering of gardens, and similar activities—has been strongly discouraged, as curbing such practices would help conserve water for critical community needs.
Residents and establishments have also been advised to carry out timely maintenance of internal water infrastructure. Repairing leaking taps, pipelines, and fittings at the earliest would significantly reduce avoidable wastage and contribute to overall conservation efforts.
Construction agencies have been specifically requested to make alternative arrangements for their water requirements and to refrain from using piped drinking water supply for construction activities, so that domestic and essential needs remain adequately met.
The Administration stated that it is closely monitoring the situation to ensure fair and equitable distribution of water. Emphasising the importance of public participation, officials noted that responsible usage and collective conservation efforts are crucial to mitigating the impact of the deficient monsoon.
The public has been urged to cooperate fully in avoiding water wastage, reiterating that through shared responsibility and prudent use, the challenge can be effectively addressed.
