In a significant step towards bridging the gap between archival resources and the community, the Andaman and Nicobar Archives has launched its first outreach programme aimed at enhancing the visibility, accessibility, and relevance of historical records. The initiative seeks to foster public engagement through social media, community events, educational activities, and proactive record acquisition efforts.
The inaugural outreach programme was conducted on May 8, 2025, for students of Jawaharlal Nehru Rajkeeya Mahavidyalaya (JNRM), under the guidance of Dr. Chandra Bhusan Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary, A&N Administration. The event focused on familiarising students with the significance of archival research and the rich historical tapestry of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Smitha R, IAS, Secretary (Archives), encouraged students to utilize the A&N Archives for academic research, especially on the Islands’ pre- and post-independence history. She highlighted the importance of connecting young minds with historical documents to cultivate a deeper understanding of the region’s past.
The programme began with a welcome address by Dr. R.V.R. Murthy, Head of the Department of History, JNRM, followed by an introductory speech from Mr. Satinder Kumar Dubey, Assistant In-Charge (AIC), Archives. An interactive session was conducted by Mr. P. Senpagaraja, HGC, engaging students in discussions on archival practices and historical inquiry.
The event saw active participation from undergraduate and postgraduate students of History and Political Science. It concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. N. Balakrishnan, Head of the Department of Political Science, JNRM.
The Archives Department aims to conduct similar programmes in the future, strengthening ties with educational institutions and promoting a culture of research and historical awareness across the Islands.
