The Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) supported rescue operations following the crash-landing of a Pawan Hans helicopter short of the Mayabunder helipad in North Andaman on Tuesday morning, a press release said.

According to the press release, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at Sri Vijaya Puram under ANC received information about the incident at approximately 9.40 am. On receipt of the distress alert, immediate action was initiated and available assets were mobilised to undertake rescue operations.

The helicopter had crash-landed just prior to touchdown at Mayabunder helipad. The aircraft was carrying seven personnel, comprising two pilots and five passengers, including three women and a five-month-old infant.

The rescue operation was carried out by ICG units in coordination with the Police Marine Force, Forest officials and local fishermen, with support from ANC. Despite the inherent risk of aviation fuel ignition and challenging conditions at the site, rescue teams operated with caution and professionalism.

All seven individuals were successfully rescued from the wreckage. The injured crew and passengers were extricated, administered first aid at the site and subsequently evacuated to the Government Hospital, Mayabunder for further medical management, the press release stated.

Subsequently, a diving team conducted a comprehensive search of the crash site to rule out the presence of any more individuals and to ensure that all personnel were fully accounted for.

The prompt and coordinated response reflects the operational readiness and inter-agency cooperation in responding to emergencies in the region, the press release added.
