Sextortion, a nefarious form of blackmail where cybercriminals coerce victims into providing money or favours under the threat of sharing intimate images online, has been a growing concern in recent times. While individuals can perpetrate sextortion, organized crime often lurks behind such heinous acts, especially when monetary demands are involved. The perpetrators, whether based in India or abroad, prey on both men and women, exploiting their privacy for malicious gains.
To counteract this rising threat, the Andaman and Nicobar Police have issued a crucial advisory aimed at empowering individuals to safeguard themselves against potential sextortion schemes. The advisory encompasses a series of proactive measures designed to minimize vulnerability to such cybercrimes:
Exercise Caution with Online Communication: Refrain from responding to unfamiliar video calls, friend requests from unknown sources, or messages from unfamiliar numbers. Similarly, avoid initiating friend requests with individuals you do not recognize to mitigate the risk of being targeted.
Guard Personal Information: Be vigilant about sharing personal phone numbers online, limiting such disclosures to trusted individuals only. This precaution reduces the likelihood of perpetrators gaining access to sensitive information for exploitation.
Exercise Discretion with Intimate Content: Resist the temptation to share intimate photos or videos on social media platforms or messaging applications. Such content can be weaponised by blackmailers, compromising victims’ privacy and subjecting them to coercive threats.
Maintain Detailed Records: Keep meticulous records of all interactions with potential blackmailers, including any demands or threats received. Documenting pertinent details about the perpetrators enhances the efficacy of reporting and aids law enforcement agencies in their investigative efforts.
