Andaman and Nicobar Police Department has bolstered its Canine Unit with the induction of four highly trained Belgian Malinois police dogs. These new members, specialized in explosive and narcotic detection, completed their training at the esteemed National Training Centre for Dogs (NTCD) under the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) in Panchkula, Haryana.
The four dogs, along with their handlers, concluded their rigorous training on June 29, 2024. They were transported to Port Blair via an Air India flight, increasing the dog squad’s strength from nine to thirteen. The current composition of the squad now includes two tracker dogs, three search and rescue dogs, four narcotics detection dogs, and four explosive detection dogs.
This enhancement was meticulously overseen by senior officers of the Andaman and Nicobar Police, ensuring that every stage, from selection and procurement to training and transportation, met the highest standards.
These elite police dogs, alongside their handlers, are being deployed for various critical duties. Their responsibilities include enhancing security and screening measures at airports and seaports, ensuring safety during high-profile events and VIP duties, providing crucial support in detecting explosives and narcotics, and assisting Anti-Narcotics Task Force teams in contraband checks. Additionally, they will play a vital role in locating missing persons, disaster survivors, and individuals in distress across diverse environments.
The new additions are expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Andaman and Nicobar Police Department, providing vital support in maintaining public safety and security throughout the region.
