In a promising development aimed at fostering educational opportunities for the students of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr.. Nicholas Low, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata, met with Member of Parliament, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma at the MP’s office in Port Blair on 7th September 2023. The meeting served as a platform for discussions on various topics, with a primary focus on the overall welfare and development of the island’s community.
The interaction between the two dignitaries went beyond mere pleasantries, delving into critical issues essential for the advancement of the islands’ youth. With a visionary goal of expanding higher education opportunities for local students, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma extended a noteworthy proposal to Mr. Low.
Inspired by the successful free scholarship schemes currently offered by the UK Government to students from Jharkhand, the Member of Parliament put forward a proposal for a similar educational collaboration, specifically tailored for the youth of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Explaining the significance of this proposal, Mr. Sharma emphasised that a free scholarship program supported by full financial backing from the UK Government would serve as a beacon of hope for numerous talented students residing in the A & N Islands. Such an initiative would provide them with the invaluable opportunity to access top-quality education at prestigious universities in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Sharma highlighted that this proposal not only holds the potential to transform the lives of island-based students but would also strengthen the collaborative bonds between the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the United Kingdom. It is envisioned that this initiative will further solidify the friendly relations and cultural exchange between the two regions.
