In a bid to foster sustainable and responsible tourism practices while upholding their commitment to preserving the environment and supporting local communities, the Tourism Department of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration organised a comprehensive awareness and sensitisation program. The event, which took place on 2nd November 2023 in Neil Kendra, Gram Panchayat, Shaheed Dweep, saw active participation from various tourism stakeholders and unemployed youth candidates. Additionally, PRI Members from Shaheed Dweep were also present at this important initiative.

With the aim of enlightening and educating, more than 150 participants gathered at the program, where officials from the Tourism Department and various other line departments emphasised the significance of responsible tourism and its positive impact on both the environment and the promotion of sustainable practices throughout the islands. This awareness program addressed the growing concerns surrounding the environmental, cultural, and social implications of tourism. It also encouraged all stakeholders to actively participate in ensuring the long-term viability of destinations. Diverse topics related to tourism activities were expertly covered by resource persons from different departments.

The Station House Officer of PS Shaheed Dweep, Mr. Pradeep Kumar, delivered a session on tourist laws and regulations, discussing restricted areas, visas, passports, and do’s and don’ts for tourists. Subsequently, officials from the Tourism Department tackled subjects such as eco-tourism and its role in conservation, reducing single-use plastic and waste management in tourist areas, and further delved into the growing concerns regarding the environmental, cultural, and social implications of tourism. They also provided general information about the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, including details about hotels, bed and breakfast options, restaurants, tourist sites, fairs, festivals, and local cuisines.

As a token of recognition for their participation and commitment to responsible tourism practices, all participants were presented with participation certificates upon the successful completion of the program.
