Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set to celebrate World Tourism Day 2024 on September 27, with the theme ‘Tourism and Peace.’ The event promises to be a grand affair, with the Tourism Department, in collaboration with various stakeholders, planning an array of activities across the islands.
A preparatory meeting chaired by the Director of the Department of Information, Publicity, and Tourism (IP&T), Mr. Azharuddin Zahiruddin Quazi, IAS, was held recently to finalise the events. During the meeting, Mr. Quazi emphasised the importance of this year’s theme and the need to celebrate it on a broader scale. He highlighted that the festivities will extend beyond Port Blair, with significant events planned for Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep, ensuring widespread participation.
The main event is scheduled to take place at Dr. BR Ambedkar Auditorium in Port Blair on the evening of September 27. In addition to the main event, a series of pre-events are planned to create a festive atmosphere across the islands. Tourists arriving at the Veer Savarkar International Airport, Rajiv Gandhi Water Sports Complex, Shaheed Dweep, and Swaraj Dweep will be greeted with a warm reception. A Trekking Expedition to Mount Manipur and a Heritage Walk, will be organised with the support of local schools, colleges, and Nehru Yuva Kendra. Heritage Walk would offer a unique experience to participants, combining adventure with the rich history of the islands.
Cultural programs will also be held at Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep, featuring performances by school students and local cultural groups. Other activities include Elocution and Quiz Competitions for students, theme-based skits, a car rally, a tourism seminar and conclave, Beach Volleyball Tournaments, and Beach Cleaning activities, reflecting the community’s engagement in promoting tourism and peace.
The celebrations aim to not only highlight the beauty of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands but also to foster a sense of peace and unity through tourism.
