Andaman & Nicobar Police solemnly observed National Police Commemoration Day on October 21st, paying tribute to the brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty across the country.

In honour of the Martyrs, a Commemoration day Parade was held at Parade Ground, Police Lines. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ms. Sindhu Pillai A (IPS), led the wreath-laying ceremony alongside senior officers of the Andaman & Nicobar Police. In a tribute, the IGP read out the names of 216 police personnel, including Ms. Leela Devi, a former Home Guard of the Andaman & Nicobar Police, to honour their ultimate sacrifice. Families of the martyrs, along with retired Deputy Superintendents of Police and Inspectors, were present to pay homage to the fallen heroes.

During her address, IGP Sindhu Pillai emphasized the crucial role that police personnel play in maintaining law and order. She acknowledged the courage and selflessness of those who laid down their lives for the nation, describing their sacrifices as the backbone of the country’s safety and security.

October 21st is observed as Police Commemoration Day in memory of the ten valiant policemen who lost their lives in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs, Ladakh, in 1959. The day also serves as a tribute to all police personnel who have died in the line of duty. To further honour these brave individuals, the national memorial “Shaheed Vedi” has been established at Hot Springs, Ladakh. Every year, representatives from police forces across India gather at the memorial to pay their respects and uphold the legacy of courage and sacrifice.

In continuation of this tribute, the Andaman & Nicobar Police has announced a series of events to observe Police Commemoration Day and Rashtriya Ekta Diwas over the next ten days, culminating on October 31st. These events will include public awareness campaigns, community outreach programs, and memorial services across various police units. The initiative aims to strengthen the bond between the police and the local community while honouring the sacrifices of the fallen officers.
