In a bid to revive interest in Khadi among the younger generation, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Khadi and Village Industries Board (A&NIKVIB) organized a special awareness programme at Government Senior Secondary School, Bathu Basti on August 2.

The programme aimed to highlight Khadi’s role as a symbol of self-reliance, patriotism, and sustainable living. Students were taken through a detailed presentation on the historical significance of Khadi during India’s freedom struggle and its relevance in contemporary times, particularly in the context of eco-friendly lifestyles.

A live demonstration of the traditional charkha (spinning wheel) allowed students to experience first-hand the techniques used in Khadi production. The event also featured an exhibition of Khadi fabrics and costumes, showcasing the texture, variety, and versatility of the fabric that remains rooted in India’s heritage while aligning with the vision of a sustainable future.

A senior teacher of the school, who was the chief guest on the occasion, inaugurated the event by garlanding a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi. In his address, he urged students to embrace indigenous products and take pride in India’s cultural legacy.

Around 120 students and teachers enthusiastically participated in the programme, which successfully instilled a renewed appreciation for Khadi—not merely as a fabric, but as a way of life promoting self-sufficiency, environmental consciousness, and national pride.
