As part of the ongoing observance of Animal Husbandry & Animal Welfare Awareness Month (Feb. 14 – March 13, 2025), the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, A&N Administration, has launched an extensive Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme across the islands.

A major campaign under this initiative was conducted on March 4 at the Veterinary Hospital in Garacharma. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Vetrivel, Ward Councillor of Garacharma, who emphasized the importance of responsible waste disposal. He urged residents to refrain from discarding kitchen waste along with sharp objects in plastic bags, as stray livestock often consume such waste, posing serious health risks.

Highlighting another growing concern, Mr. Vetrivel pointed out the rising number of livestock accidents caused by stray animals wandering onto roads. He stressed that proper housing and feeding practices could help mitigate such incidents.

Three dedicated veterinary teams, led by Dr. Baljit Kaur (SVO), Dr. V. Subramanium (SVO), and Dr. Parag Deori (SVO), carried out sterilization procedures on pet animals during the drive. Similar campaigns were also conducted at the Veterinary Dispensary in Swaraj Dweep and the Veterinary Hospital in Diglipur, further strengthening efforts to control the stray animal population and promote animal welfare across the islands.
