The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) actively participated in several major melas held across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during January 2026, setting up informative and interactive stalls to directly engage with farmers, livestock owners, students and the general public.

The initiative was part of the Department’s continued efforts to promote scientific animal husbandry practices, create awareness about government schemes and strengthen community outreach in both rural and tourist locations.

The Department marked its presence at the Vivekananda Mela at Shaheed Dweep on January 12, followed by participation in the Subhash Mela organized simultaneously at Mayabunder, Kadamtala and Swaraj Dweep on January 23. At each venue, the AH&VS stall served as a key platform to showcase various departmental schemes and services, including vaccination programmes, disease prevention measures, artificial insemination services (AI & SSS-AI), poultry and goatery development initiatives, fodder management practices, and financial assistance and subsidy schemes available for farmers and livestock rearers.

Veterinary officers and trained staff were present throughout the melas to interact with visitors, provide on-the-spot technical guidance, respond to queries on animal health, vaccination schedules, nutrition, breeding methods and farm management, and distribute informational materials.

The stalls received an encouraging response from farmers, students, women Self Help Group members and members of the public, reflecting a growing interest in scientific livestock rearing and the support programmes offered by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services.
