In a significant step towards strengthening environmental safeguards in veterinary practices, the Andaman & Nicobar Pollution Control Committee (ANPCC), operating under the Department of Science & Technology, organized a comprehensive training session for Senior Veterinary Officers (SVOs) from across the Islands on July 1, 2025.

The training, held at Sri Vijaya Puram, focused on the proper disposal of Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) and the mandatory procedures for registration and authorisation of veterinary establishments as per the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016.

During the session, officials from ANPCC emphasised the importance of timely submission of applications to the Committee’s office at Dollygunj and detailed the process for obtaining Consent to Operate (CTO), a key regulatory requirement for veterinary institutions. The workshop also covered fee structures, required documentation, and application deadlines.

Mr. Raj Babu, a representative from ANPCC, briefed attendees on critical environmental safeguards mandated under the BMW Rules 2016. He highlighted the potential environmental impacts of non-compliance and the shared responsibility of veterinary institutions in upholding public health standards.

The ANPCC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting veterinary services through continued technical assistance, expert guidance, and regular follow-up inspections. This initiative is seen as a pivotal move in aligning the Islands’ veterinary services with national environmental norms and ensuring sustainable medical waste management.
