In a move to address the ongoing struggle faced by residents of Great Nicobar Island, Mr. TSG Bhasker, Chairman of the ANTCC Campaign Committee, has taken up the issue of the persistent shortage of LPG cylinders, which has plagued the island for several years.

In a letter addressed to the Director of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, Mr. Bhasker expressed deep concern over the prolonged scarcity of LPG cylinders that has caused significant distress to the island’s residents. He highlighted that the situation has not only disrupted daily routines but also made it difficult for families to prepare meals, severely affecting their quality of life.

“The shortage of LPG cylinders has caused immense suffering among the Islanders,” Mr. Bhasker wrote, adding that the impact has been particularly harsh on elderly residents and children, who rely on regular meals for their well-being. The lack of a reliable cooking fuel source, he said, is endangering their health and welfare.

Mr. Bhasker also pointed out that while the residents had previously managed the fuel crisis by using kerosene as an alternative, the cessation of kerosene supply has worsened the situation, leaving the Islanders without any accessible means of cooking.

“It is heartbreaking to witness our Islanders endure these hardships when access to a basic necessity like cooking gas is at stake,” he stated, emphasizing the critical nature of the problem.

Concluding his letter, Mr. Bhasker urged the authorities to take swift action to resolve the crisis. He called for an immediate increase in LPG supply to the island through regular deliveries and better communication with the community regarding cylinder availability.

The long-standing LPG shortage in Great Nicobar has been a recurring issue, affecting the lives of thousands of residents. With the added strain of kerosene supply being cut off, the islanders are in desperate need of a sustainable solution to this fuel crisis. Mr. Bhasker’s appeal aims to bring the matter to the forefront and push for urgent action to alleviate the suffering of the people in the region.
