The Andaman and Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC) on Thursday organised a protest in South Andaman opposing the introduction of the New Labour Code by the BJP-led Central Government.
The protest, held in front of Chatham Saw Mill, was organised in support of the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and the Forest Labour Union. Workers, union members and Congress leaders participated in the demonstration.
According to the ANTCC, the protest was led by its President Rangalal Halder and Campaign Committee Chairman G. Bhasker. Addressing the gathering, speakers expressed concerns over the provisions of the New Labour Code, stating that it could dilute existing labour protections, weaken job security and restrict the right to strike. They alleged that the new framework favours corporate interests over workers’ welfare and urged the government to reconsider and withdraw provisions they described as anti-worker.
The programme was attended by Block Congress leaders, the Mahila Congress President, the City Congress President, representatives of INTUC and the Forest Labour Union, Fisherman Congress representatives, SVPMC councillors, and other senior party leaders and workers.
ANTCC stated that it would continue to support the labour community and advocate for the protection of workers’ rights in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and across the country.
