In a pressing appeal to the Director of Agriculture, A & N Administration, the President of the Andaman Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee, Mr. Rangalal Halder, has called for urgent measures to tackle the critical shortage of agricultural inputs affecting farmers throughout the islands.
Mr. Halder pointed out the substantial challenges faced by local farmers due to a lack of access to essential resources, including fertilisers, pesticides, manure, medicines, and quality seeds. Many farmers are currently forced to procure these necessary supplies from private sources, often at inflated prices, creating a heavy financial burden that jeopardises sustainable agricultural practices and threatens the livelihoods of those who depend on farming for their income.
Highlighting the unique geographical and logistical challenges inherent to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. Halder stressed the need for the Agriculture Department to establish a steady and reliable supply of agricultural inputs through government-operated outlets. He emphasised that making these inputs available at subsidized rates is crucial for supporting local farmers and ensuring equitable access to essential resources.
“The farmers of Andaman and Nicobar Islands contribute significantly to our local economy and food security. They deserve the support of our government to help alleviate their financial hardships and enable them to maintain sustainable farming practices,” stated Mr. Halder.
He concluded his appeal by urging the Director of Agriculture to take prompt and effective action to address these issues, ensuring that farmers receive the necessary support to continue their vital work.
