Anti-Leprosy Day Observed at ANIIMS; SPARSH Leprosy Awareness Campaign 2026 Launched

A State-level function to observe Anti-Leprosy Day was held on January 30, 2026, at the auditorium of ANIIMS, marking the launch of the SPARSH Leprosy Awareness Campaign 2026. This year’s campaign is being observed with the theme “Ending Discrimination, Ensuring Dignity.”

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Dr. H.M. Siddaraju, Director of Health Services, spoke on the social dimensions of leprosy and the current scenario of the disease in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He emphasized the need to dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding leprosy and urged participants to spread scientific and factual information among the public to combat stigma and discrimination.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. B. Ajit Kumar, Deputy Director (Leprosy), elaborated on leprosy, its treatment, and the social challenges faced by persons affected by the disease. He highlighted the persistent issues of stigma and discrimination and stressed the importance of awareness, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.

On the occasion, Dr. Ajit Kumar also administered the Anti-Leprosy Day oath to the audience, reaffirming collective commitment towards eliminating discrimination and promoting dignity and inclusion for persons affected by leprosy.
