In a major breakthrough in the fight against narcotics, the Anti-Narcotics Police Station in Sri Vijaya Puram seized 1.510 kilograms of ganja and arrested two individuals on April 29, 2025.
Acting on specific intelligence, a police team led by Inspector Sahil Shamsudeen, Officer-in-Charge, Anti-Narcotics Police Station, raided the Blue Dart Courier office at Gurudwara Lane, Sri Vijaya Puram. The team included SI S. Sudhersanan, ASI Sanjay Yadav, and police constables Ratan Das, M. Raja Rao, Nanak Singh, Tamil Selvam, and Nandita Mistry. The operation was carried out under the overall command of Dy. SP (Narcotics) Mr. Manish Kumar, DANIPS, and supervised by Mr. Jitendra Kumar Meena, IPS, Senior Superintendent of Police (CID), Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
During the operation, police intercepted a suspicious parcel and recovered 1.510 kg of ganja hidden inside a carton box. The contraband was seized and 21-year-old Md. Tabrez, a native of Bhagalpur, Bihar, currently residing in Garacharma, was arrested on the spot. The entire search and seizure was digitally recorded through the E-Saakshya platform, in compliance with the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
Further investigation revealed that Tabrez was acting on the instructions of Mohammed Puhari, 50, a resident of Teylerabad. According to police, Puhari had directed Tabrez to procure the contraband from Bihar for resale in the islands, with an arrangement to split the profits. Puhari, who has a previous criminal record and is already an accused in an NDPS case registered earlier this year at the Crime and Economic Offences Police Station, was also arrested.
Both accused have been remanded to two days of police custody by the Hon’ble Court as investigations continue to uncover the full extent of the supply chain.
A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Police officials say efforts are underway to trace the broader network behind the illegal operation.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police have urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious drug-related activities. Citizens can contact the police through helpline numbers 112, 234216, 9531908234, and 9531856080.
