The Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) has invited tender for the repair and restoration of the historic Chatham Causeway Bridge, a vital link connecting Sri Vijaya Puram with Chatham Island. The tender was floated on December 9, 2025, and is scheduled to be opened on January 2, 2026.
Constructed in 1919, the Chatham Causeway Bridge has undergone considerable wear and tear due to heavy traffic load and challenging climatic conditions. Over the years, the structural condition of the bridge has deteriorated, affecting smooth vehicular and pedestrian movement.
A detailed assessment conducted by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli, recommended specific structural repair measures to restore the bridge’s operational safety and functionality. Acting on these recommendations and keeping in view the inconvenience faced by residents due to restricted movement, the Union Territory Administration has decided to undertake repairs of the existing bridge.
The initiation of the tendering process marks a significant step towards restoring this crucial infrastructure and ensuring safe and reliable connectivity. Once completed, the repair work is expected to ease travel difficulties, enhance public safety, and restore seamless movement between Sri Vijaya Puram and Chatham Island, providing much-needed relief to commuters and the local community.
