In a proactive move to promote water conservation and responsible use of drinking water, the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) organised an awareness rally today under the leadership of its Chief Engineer, Mr. T. K. Prijith Rekh.

The rally was flagged off from the Chief Engineer’s Office Complex in the morning with the objective of sensitising the public on the judicious use of drinking water supplied by APWD and the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC), particularly in view of the prevailing water availability situation.

Addressing the participants before flagging off the rally, Mr. Rekh drew attention to the significant deficiency in the North-East Monsoon and its consequent impact on water availability and supply distribution across the region. He noted that the shortfall in rainfall has placed additional pressure on existing water resources, making conservation efforts all the more crucial.

The Chief Engineer urged participants to act as ambassadors of awareness and actively educate consumers on reducing water wastage through mindful and efficient usage. He stressed the importance of judicious water use for daily activities such as drinking, cooking, flushing, bathing and other household needs. Informing the gathering about official norms, he stated that the prescribed minimum drinking water supply ranges between 55 and 100 litres per capita per day (LPCD), depending on whether the area is rural or urban.

Mr. Rekh also encouraged citizens to adopt self water audits at the household level to identify areas of unnecessary consumption and wastage. He emphasised that collective responsibility and behavioural change are essential to ensure sustainable water availability in the long term.

Concluding his address, the Chief Engineer expressed appreciation to all participants for their enthusiastic involvement and support in making the rally successful and contributing to the cause of water conservation.

As part of its sustained awareness efforts, a similar rally was organised a day earlier in the Bathubasti area under the supervision of the Executive Engineer, PHED, to spread awareness on the judicious use of drinking water across different localities, a press release said.
